چکیده

Introduction: The number of currently available images of the surface of Mars is in the order of the hundreds of thousands. These have been captured over the years by many different instruments on board automatic probes. They have diverse spectral characteristics, varying spatial resolutions and cover areas of different dimensions, providing global, regional and sometimes local views. To manually browse all these images in search of a specific structure of interest is a hard and time consuming process. Thus, our objective is to create a tool that can learn the characteristics of a certain structure in an image and be able to automatically search for it over a huge quantity of data. Currently, we are interested on dune fields, being our approach developed, tested and calibrated for searching those aeolian features on Mars. Dunes fields serve as unique indicators of the interaction between the atmosphere and surface, being among the most widespread aeolian features present on Mars. The study of dune processes contributes to both atmospheric and sedimentary science. Previous works that characterized aeolian features in regional terms conducted manual surveys on image datasets in order to find dune fields [1]. Also, the well established Mars Digital Dune Database [2] was constructed and updated without the use of automated procedures.

Aeolian Processes and Their Effects on Understanding the Chronology of Mars

Aeolian (wind) processes can transport particles over large distances on Mars, leading to the modification or removal of surface features, formation of new landforms, and mantling or burial of surfaces. Erosion of mantling deposits by wind deflation can exhume older surfaces. These processes and their effects on the surface must be taken into account in using impact crater statistics to derive ...

TRANSIENT AEOLIAN FEATURES DETECTED AUTONOMOUSLY IN HiRISE IMAGES OF EL

Introduction: Since the 1970s, images taken of Mars have shown the presence of transient aeolian features such as dust devil tracks, bedforms and windstreaks. High-resolution images of a small portion of Gusev crater were chosen to test the development of autonomous recognition algorithms for these transient features. A pair of images representing a difference of three years in time was analyze...

The Variability of Transverse Aeolian Ridges in Troughs on Mars

Introduction: A precursory glance at MGS images of the surface of Mars show an abundance of aeolian transverse ridges [1]. These ridges are located in a variety of geological terrains. Zimbelman and Wi lson [2] have separated the small-scale aeolian features of Syrtis Major into six categories: ripples associated with obstacles, ripple bands, ripple fields, ripple patches, isolated ripple patch...

THE CAMEL PROJECT - CHARACTERIZATION AND CLASSIFICATION OF DUNE FIELDS ON MARS BASED ON EARTH. T. Barata1, P.Pina2,

Introduction: Dunes are common features on planetary surfaces where unconsolidated material is present in abundance and responds to an atmosphere capable of producing significant winds. Wind is the most important erosive agent on present-day Mars, and the availability of large amounts of loose sand and dust provides conditions for the existence of dune fields all over the planet. They are the m...
